Discovering the Pomodoro Technique

Quite recently, I've started with a new technique for organizing my working day. Something, which at first seemed totally inappropriate for the kind of work I do and my usual working habits, turned out to be a surprisingly effective technique that I’ve clicked with within a matter of days.

My usual model of working used to be working in longer chunks from 1.5 to 2 hours, after which I’d take a short break. I could do like that for three chunks without a problem, and started losing concentration afterwards. Still, it seemed like a normal thing, getting tired after having a decent amount of work done. The other problem with this approach is sitting in front of the computer for too long without stretching, or taking a walk around the office.

I wasn’t taking that as an actual problem, and although I have come across the Pomodoro technique earlier, I had dismissed it quite easily for being too obtrusive for my model of longer chunks of concentrated work, and forgot about it. But recently, I’ve came across it again, when I saw a colleague using it. I’ve decided to give it a try for one-week and see how it works.

Although not believing that it could ever fit me, I’ve discovered something completely unexpected - working in 25 minutes chunks with 5 minutes breaks made me feel fresh throughout the day, keeping my productivity and creativity on a high level. I’ve noticed I don’t get as tired towards the end of the day as before, and also that I’m taking the opportunity to stretch regularly, take a walk around the office or grab a fruit.

But the real benefit was that I wasn’t feeling exhausted coming home after a day in the office. That was the detail that really surprised me and assured me that I should keep using the technique. After about a month and a half, it has become an indispensable tool for making my day more focused and creative at work, and having more energy afterwards.

It’s a real joy to discover something that makes you feel better, more creative, productive and energized throughout the day. And repeating it each day...
